Oh boy,  do I love this time of year!  Chilly starts and warming days can produce some great days out in The Everglades National Park.  Snook, Redfish and smaller Tarpon can be around any corner!

People always ask me when is the best time of the year to come to The Park and Fly Fish or Spin/Plug fish and my response is always whenever you can get your butt down here and climb in my Skiff  Yes,  there are certain times of the year that are more conducive for say,  larger Tarpon,  but in the grand scheme of things,  I’d say anytime you can break free from the hustle and bustle of everyday life is the time to come fish this truly spectacular fishery I call my home  

I recently had a young man by the name of Rick on board my Skiff.  He traveled all the way from Sacramento, California to experience what The Everglades National Park has to offer and it’s probably safe to say that he’ll be back

Winter is definitely here with temps getting into the 40’s and 50’s at night.  With that being said,  it’s really not that bad as long as we have good warmups between cold fronts.  This is definitely nothing like we had in the Winter of 09 and 10.  That was a Winter I will not soon forget.  Our Snook and Juvenile Tarpon took a hard hit,  that’s for sure. In my opinion,  these cool downs can make for great fishing once the temps pick up throughout a day of fishing in The Everglades National Park.  Watching The Glades come to life as the Sun warms certain areas can be pretty darn fun.  

Snook are scattered throughout The Glades right now along with Redfish,  Speckled Seatrout and Juvenile Tarpon.  Catching a Backcountry Slam on any given day in The Glades is always cast away!

I recently had a Father/Son duo.  Tommy and his Pops, Jim out in The Park and we had a blast!  Tommy is a young Hockey player and you could definitely tell with his casting.  “Tight is Right” is my motto and Tommy could definitely get it in there

Well it’s official!  Winter is here!  One of my favorite Seasons in The Glades.   This time of year can be epic!  The Everglades National Park offers so much to the Anglers who venture out into it.  If you’re a hardcore Fly Angler or a Bass fisherman down deep anything from Fly tackle to Bass gear is all you need to have a great time in the Everglades.  The Snook and Tarpon fishing has been a blast so far and only should get better and better as we begin our progression towards Spring.  Depending on how “Winterish” it gets down here will dictate how the fish behave.  Water temperatures are great right and promote fish feeding.  Cool mornings with a great little warmup throughout the day makes for a fun time in the Everglades from Chokoloskee all the way down to Flamingo.  

Get out there and experience what such a great fishery has to offer!  I’ll say it again and again,  if you have not been blessed enough to have been able to spend a day or two is this spectacular ecosystem,  you definitely owe it to yourself!

The fishing in the Everglades National Park has been great this Fall!  It is only going to get better as we transition into Winter.  Be it Fly Fishing or Spin/Plug Fishing,  pick your poison!  On one of my most recent trips with a Fly Angler looking for Snook we were pleasantly surprised with a nice Tripletail.  You just never know what you might encounter in The Everglades,  that’s for sure.  This place is magical.  On this particular morning we were a little fogged in,  but persevered after about an hour wait.  When fog rolls in down here in The Glades,  your best bet is to wait it out.  I did see a few boats running in the fog which saddened me.  The Everglades National Park is a place for all walks of life to enjoy.  This is why in foggy conditions,  the safe bet is to wait for it to lift.  Kayakers and Canoers can be around any corner.  Safety is paramount.  The good Lord looked out for us,  that’s for sure.  Light winds and great visibility were our reward once it cleared up and made for a great day!

Fly Fishing and Spin/Plug Fishing in The Everglades National Park has been pretty darn good lately.  I love this time of year. Making that run in the morning with a light jacket on and sipping on some coffee,  mmmmm, mmmmm, mmmmm!  It almost doesn’t get any better than that.  Watching the Glades wake-up is pretty spectacular.  From Roseate Spoonbills looking for breakfast to Snook chasing Glass Minnows down a shoreline.  The Everglades never disappoints.  

Spin/Plug Fishing fishing with soft plastics,  be it Texas rigged jerk baits or any of your favorite plastics on a jig head will catch fish right now.  Twitch baits, maybe downsized a bit will definitely bring some fish to the skiff also.

Fly Fishing (my passion) is also paying off right now.  Flies should be swapped out constantly until you find out what the fish are keying in on that day.  Sometimes all it takes is a color change.  Going from a darker Fly to a brighter Fly or vice versa can be the key to bringing some fish to hand.

The whole Park is fishing really well right now.  From the Outside to the Backcountry.

Florida is definitely catching up with the rest of the Country regarding our cool down.  Water temps and air temps are dropping with every cold front passing through.  

The fishing this time of year can be awesome!  Fly Fishing The Everglades in The Fall can be a blast.  I get asked all the time by my Clients,  “what do I need to do before my trip”?  My response each and every time is,  PRACTICE CASTING.  It doesn’t matter if you are a Spin Angler or a Fly Fishing Aficionado.  Pick up a rod and hit the backyard for ten or fifteen minutes a couple of times before you come down and fish The Park.  Fishing a mangrove shoreline can be rather daunting if you never have done it before and pretty rewarding if you put in the time and practice.  If Snook, Redfish and Tarpon were easy to catch everyone would do it. Practice casting prior to any fishing trip can be the difference between a good trip and an awesome trip,  I promise.  

The Everglades and its fishery will get in your blood.  Once you experience it you will want to come back time and again. With this being said,  the bite has been great.  We are in the Winter transition phase in the Park.  The Snook and Redfish are everywhere. Tarpon are definitely a favorite this time of year,  but you always have to be ready.  Tarpon are creatures of habit and will hangout in the same haunts,  but they will definitely surprise you as long as you pay attention.  I continue to find Tarpon in spots that I never knew about by just paying attention and being aware of my surroundings.  

Fly Fishing and Light Tackle fishing this time of year can be a blast!  As I mentioned earlier,  grab a rod and practice.  You owe it to yourself and your Guide.

Fishing The Everglades can be great this time of year!  Not only can the weather be great,  the fishing bite can be great as well!  

Snook fishing can be really fun this time of year.  The water temps are slowly dropping,  which can be a great thing!  Bait is everywhere.  Acres of bait can be found all of The Everglades right now.  From outside all the way to the Backcountry.  

Snook are my favorite fish on the Planet and The Glades can be an awesome place to target them!  Snook are a keen species to target on both Fly tackle or Spin/Plug gear.  I’ve had Snook just lay there emulating a log or a stick on the bottom and let me pole right by them before.  Fishing for Snook is like hunting essentially.  Poling their haunts can be so much fun that there have been many a day that I wish there was more time in the trip to keep fishing for them as opposed to running back to the dock.  

Chokoloskee is my home and where I’m based out of.  Chokoloskee is on the Northern end of The Everglades National Park and a great geographical location to strike out into The Glades.  If you have never been to my neck of the woods, please feel free to reach out and we’ll plan your next trip.  There is great Lodging on Chokoloskee and in Everglades City which is about 3 miles up the road from Chokoloskee.

Happy Veterans Day to all who have served and who are serving!  

Let us please not forget the sacrifices our Veterans have made and will continue to make to keep our Country free.

With that being said, the bite in the Everglades National Park continues to get better and better.  If you are a fly fisherman or a conventional Spin/plug angler this is a great time to fish the Glades.  We have not received any “real” cold fronts yet so the fish are everywhere.  This is a great thing if you like to explore the Everglades national Park from the Coastal Bights to deep in the Backcountry.  

The Snook bite is consistent along with Redfish and Tarpon.  This is the great thing about the Everglades one cast could result in an explosive strike from a Snook, and the next cast could be an epic take from a Tarpon, you just never know.

Don’t let the Everglades elude you!  This is a great time to experience this wonderful place.  I feel very blessed to be able to show people this amazing place.

Fishing in the Everglades National Park has been pretty darn good!  It has been a little breezy with these fronts coming down, but that is one nice thing about the Backcountry of the Everglades you can almost always get out of the wind.  The plethora of islands that exist in the Everglades coastal area all the way through to the Backcountry can be great way to hone your fly fishing skills on any given day.  Throw in some wind and maybe a little rain and one can definitely appreciate The Glade’s natural layout.  


The Snook, Tarpon and Redfish can be anywhere this time of year.  A Backcountry Slam can happen on any outing in The Park.  

The migratory birds are making their way back to the Everglades for the Winter and part of the Spring.  I truly look forward to seeing all the wildlife throughout The Everglades National Park.  Sometimes it is surreal to see so many animals.  From Roseate Spoonbills to Saltwater Crocs,  The Everglades can deliver a sensory overload around any corner.  

A few more weeks and Hurricane Season will be in the rear view mirror,  thank goodness!  In the meantime,  the fishing in The Glades will only heat up!

The fishing in The Everglades National Park has been pretty consistent.  With Fall upon us, The Glades can  be a great place to target the “go to” species!  Redfish, Snook and Tarpon fishing can be awesome this time of year!  If you are sight fishing or blind casting a shoreline anything can happen.  The Everglades can definitely surprise you at any moment.  From juvenile Tarpon rolling happily or from a monster Snook creeping down a warm sunlit shoreline.  

The Glades is certainly a beautiful backdrop to hone your casting skills,  be it with the Fly Rod or spin/plug gear.  The Mangroves will humble even the most experienced Anglers.  I preach the mantra “tight is right”.  Casting flies or lures tight to the mangroves is essential all throughout the year in the Everglades.  With this being said,  it is always wise to keep a keen eye out for the occasional fish cruising off the shoreline.  This can be an opportunity for some awesome visual “eats”!  

As the weather begins to cool down and transition into our Fall/Winter pattern the fishing in The Glades will definitely begin to heat up!
